You have been quoted as saying “Sometimes Taking Things Out Counts as Writing.” Could you expand a bit more on what you meant by this? CN: Yes. CN: I'm a mother who writes. Everything I Never Told YouCeleste Ng writes in the Reader’s Guide (link below), “In writing , I was surprised to remember how different things were just a … And I guess there are some areas that other people are curious about. (It’s maybe best explained by this Dilbert cartoon, which I actually keep over my desk.) What is writing to you? You'd think that they would come by. Authentic in every detail, this is an unforgettable story. As Seventeen declared, "Porter's candid narrative will have you hooked from the opening sentence." But when you honestly don't know the answer to something, and it's something important, it's hard to admit that you don't know, and I think that's also really valuable--this goes back to what we were talking about in the beginning, the idea that adults don't know everything. But it will be set in my hometown of Shaker Heights, Ohio—a suburb of Cleveland and a place I love and find fascinating. In fact I'd enjoy it, 'cause I think Jews are not normally represented in sports teams. And I was coordinating with my now husband. It's a sports team, in a highly monetized sport. There are plenty more, but that’s just off the top of my head. I feel like I know a lot of people who, they lead perfectly good lives, they pay the pills and they have good families but they didn't get a chance to do something that they wanted, whether it was to play the guitar or to write a book. Two days later, I'm looking at the windshield wipers and I thought, one, I really didn't try very hard to answer his question and I feel bad about that, and--. RB: What's stopping you? CN: [laughs] Well, I get to talk to people who aspire to be like you. Way back, I have a lot of scientists in my family, we have a lot of engineers in our family, but my mother's--I think her great grandfather--wrote the first English language, English grammar book in Hong Kong. And the interview is asking him these questions, and you could tell that he could, that he barely understood these questions. Or if you as an adult aren't happy. Organizations like We Need Diverse Books have done a lot to help draw attention to this issue. In her contemplative interview with BW, Ng talks about the trials she faces as an author and the importance of diversity in literature. In first person, I feel like I have blinders and a mute on: there’s so much any given character can’t notice or say because that’s not the kind of person he or she is. If you look at stories in those terms—and I’d argue that you can read virtually any story in terms of connection and disconnection—then you start to understand why outsiders are so often the focus in fiction. CN: It does. Celeste Ng is an Asian American writer. CN: Never say never. What type of research did you do to ensure the setting was depicted in an authentic manner? I worked on this novel for six and a half years, and although I had published some short stories along the way and had a wonderful agent, there were still no guarantees that (1) I’d ever finish the book or (2) that a publisher would want to take it on or (3) that anyone would want to read it once it was published. If you could transform into one animal for one week, what would you be? I guarantee you most Americans have no idea how badly the Native Americans were treated, and how badly the US government acted. Cause and effect seem to rule this world, almost like a chemical reaction, which is interesting as the parents are students of history and science. And I think that maybe what your friend is talking about now, or part of what your friend is talking about now, is the feeling that we should be giving our kids all of those things. And I'm glad that those are people who, if that's something they've always wanted to do, are actually doing it, and are taking steps to do it. He recognizes Lydia's fault right away, which is that she doesn't know what she wants, that she's just doing what her family wants. In life, sometimes things just *happen*. She was her parents’ favourite, the opposite of a troublemaker, an innocent. I guess that's another way of thinking about it. Written in an interview style and being about a successful band could make it hard to engage with emotionally, but wow does it do just that. Was that your goal? I do see things differently when I experience them with a four-year-old who’s never seen them before. Those gave me the details: the marbled lungs, the foam around the lips, and so on. Her first novel, Everything I Never Told You, published in the summer of 2014, was well received. It think of it as not the best analogy maybe but all of that stuff is in there fermenting and at some point is gonna turn into something. More writers are out there telling their stories and wrestling with the idea of being different in some way, and I hope that trend continues. RB: So what state do you return to after you've paid attention to that? CN: We'll just go to London just for that. In your novel, you pick 1970s Ohio for the setting. It’s hard to just stop thinking about a project when it’s time to make dinner or put your kids to bed—at least, it is for me. A lot of the debates about--what is chick lit? Ng's debut novel … They lead pretty pampered lives and they get to nap a lot. RB: Is it possible--is there any character in this slew of characters that you find more admirable or stand out in a way that most of them don't? Everything I Never Told You is a 2014 debut novel by Celeste Ng. It topped Amazon's Best Books of the Year list for 2014. The novel is about a mixed-race Chinese-American family whose middle daughter Lydia is found drowned in a lake. Ng spent six years writing the novel, going through four different full drafts. Elizabeth McCracken has a wonderful exercise, which I found in Naming the World, a book of exercises edited by Bret Anthony Johnston. You could see he just didn't understand how to answer the question, just "I don't know, it just came to me, it just happened, and I wrote it down." Or, "Why don't some people have enough money for food?" Celeste Ng. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that events in this book are built on other things, past slights, hidden emotions, old misunderstandings, things never said, even world events such as the space program. It was oddly beautiful, this bizarre moment of resilience, and I wanted to put it into the novel. Are you good at editing your own work? It's such a cliche, but if you ever actually do a jigsaw puzzle and you're sitting there--I never did them until I was teaching in graduate school, and we would sit in the student area for our students to come for office hours, and they never showed up, so we'd all be sitting there, and we'd be talking and--. And, how are their productions viewed? CN: There is an implicit question in there. We tend to think of children as being fanciful and adults as being realists, but I actually think that’s backwards. A.C.E stands for Adventure Calling Emotions, meaning that the group wants to cause emotions that urge people to go on adventures and make the dreams come true. “She would get her father’s jokes, her brother’s secrets, her mother’s best smiles” (p. 22), and she is the one who sees something the night Lydia disappears. I love everything she writes. Which Asian authors inspire you and what types of genres or stories would you like to see more Asian authors tackling? RB: You're a Harvard Writer, a University of Michigan--[laughs]. I'm sort of always writing short stories in the back of my head. I don't know how much teenagers listen--I don't think I listened very hard when I was a teenager. And trying to raise a little person makes me think very deeply about what I believe, and what’s important to me. RB: Do you know how to edit yourself? RB: Can you believe his most recent--he and his daughter--accusing Obama of missing foreign policy objectives, blah blah blah. I’m glad I observed it and I’m glad I wrote it, but I wasn’t sorry to see it go. Someday, perhaps, our culture will evolve enough so that race matters less, and then we’ll be able to have more stories with Asians (and other people of color) that aren’t about being different. That one I did feel a pang over. CN: I want him to find something that he is really excited by, or passionate about, or stimulated by, however you want to phrase that. This whole family emerged, struggling with their relationship with each other as well as with their places in the outside world. The book opens in 1977. CN: They know a lot of people, and my mom did some writing when she was younger, and we have a couple of writers in our family that we're sort of proud of. When I was growing up, hardly any of the books I read featured Asian characters—or any non-white characters. CN: A lot of it is getting ready for the publication of this book. There just aren’t any guarantees in writing, full stop. And by the way, changing the name is not going to help Native Americans—they continue to be consistently screwed. Each family has their secrets. This is really something that will happen if you step on a dead bee, by the way (try it). I liked the philosophy and ethos of the program. So I’ve always been drawn to outsiders, and that’s probably why in Everything I Never Told You, everyone in the Lee family is something of an outsider.
